Blackmagic PYXIS 12K EF is a full-frame cinema camera with a compact, modular body designed to combine flagship performance, low weight and versatile configurations. It can serve as the main camera for independent productions, documentaries, fashion, travel and corporate shoots, or as a second camera on high-end feature-film and television sets to expand scene coverage or perform specific tasks.

The next-generation RGBW sensor provides 12K resolution at 12,288 × 8040 and includes an optical low-pass filter. Compared with traditional Bayer sensors, the RGBW structure delivers more accurate colour rendition, improved colour separation and better handling of highlights and shadows, with 16 stops of dynamic range. In-sensor scaling makes it possible to work as a 4K, 8K or 12K camera without cropping the sensor: the entire full-frame surface is used and the 12K image is internally resampled to create 8K or 4K.

This operation maintains visual consistency when a production switches between resolutions and when ultra-high-definition material is needed for VFX, green screen or plate work. The box-style design supports many configurations, including lightweight rigs for handheld shooting, setups with gimbals, drones, arms and vehicles, and complete cinema configurations with matte boxes, follow focus and professional accessories. The active locking EF mount accepts Canon full-frame lenses and compatible third-party models.

The camera records internally in 12-bit Blackmagic RAW at all supported resolutions. It can generate H.264 proxies at the same time, supporting fast, collaborative and cloud-based workflows. The camera includes two CFexpress slots, a high-speed USB-C port for SSD recording, 10G Ethernet for immediate transfers and automatic uploads to Blackmagic Cloud, 12G-SDI output, mini-XLR audio and Time Code. The RAW codec is designed for post-production, reducing the limitations typical of mirrorless cameras using compressed codecs and simplifying the process from shooting through finishing.

Within its market segment, PYXIS 12K EF combines a full-frame RGBW sensor, complete internal RAW recording, image performance above cine-like mirrorless cameras and uncropped 4K, 8K and 12K versatility. Its operating flexibility allows rental companies to offer it as a 4K, 8K or 12K camera according to customer requirements. For these reasons, it is also suitable for independent operators working on documentaries, travel and fashion.
