Blackmagic Design DeckLink Quad 2 is a PCIe video card with 8 configurable channels for capture and playback up to 1080p 60. Compared with the previous 4-channel model, it provides 4 independent channels for capture and playback plus another 4 channels, allowing the card to be configured with up to 8 capture channels or 8 playback channels. The eight 3G-SDI BNC connectors can be set individually and independently as inputs or outputs, in both SD and HD, up to 1080p 60.

The card handles multi-channel SDI capture and playback through 8 independent bi-directional HD/SD-SDI connections. The 8 channels can be combined as required, with instant switching between capture and playback. Its architecture is intended for developing custom I/O solutions.

Connections and audio. There are 8 3G-SDI mini DIN video connections for input and 8 3G-SDI mini DIN video connections for output; all can be independently configured as Input or Output and support SD and HD signals up to 12-bit. SDI audio inputs provide 16 channels embedded in SD and HD, while SDI audio outputs provide 16 channels embedded in SD and HD. The Sync input accepts Tri-Sync or Black Burst. The computer interface is PCI Express 8 lane generation 2, compatible with 8 and 16 lane PCI Express slots.

Supported codecs. DeckLink Quad 2 supports AVC-Intra, AVCHD, Canon XF MPEG2, Digital SLR, DV-NTSC, DV-PAL, DVCPRO50, DVCPROHD, DPX, HDV, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD422, DNxHR and DNxHD, Apple ProRes 4444, Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes LT and Apple ProRes 422 Proxy, together with uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2, 10-bit 4:2:2 and 10-bit 4:4:4 video.

Installation, software and operating systems. Physical installation uses PCI Express 8 lane generation 2, compatible with 8 and 16 lane slots on Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Mac OS systems require a Mac Pro computer with PCI Express slots; the full system requirements should be checked on the Support pages. Included software consists of Media Express, Disk Speed Test, LiveKey, Blackmagic Desktop Video Utility and the Blackmagic driver for Mac OS and Windows; Linux includes Media Express, Blackmagic Desktop Video Utility and the Blackmagic driver. The internal software upgrade is firmware built into the driver, loaded at system start or through updater software.

SD and HD video standards. SD standards include 525i 59.94 NTSC and 625i 50 PAL. HD standards include 720p 50, 720p 59.94, 720p 60, 1080p 23.98, 1080p 24, 1080p 25, 1080p 29.97, 1080p 30, 1080p 50, 1080p 59.94, 1080p 60, 1080PsF 23.98, 1080PsF 24, 1080PsF 25, 1080PsF 29.97, 1080PsF 30, 1080i 50, 1080i 59.94 and 1080i 60.

Compliance and signal processing. SDI compliance includes SMPTE 259M, SMPTE 292M, SMPTE 296M, SMPTE 372M, SMPTE 425M, ITU-R BT.656 and ITU-R BT.601. SDI metadata support includes RP 188/SMPTE 12M-2 and closed captioning. Audio sampling follows the television standard sample rate of 48 kHz at 24-bit; SDI video sampling is 4:2:2 and 4:4:4. SDI colour precision is 8, 10 and 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 in all modes up to 1080p 30, and 8 and 10-bit YUV 4:2:2 in all modes; 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 is supported only in playback. Colour spaces are REC 601, REC 709 and REC 2020. HDR static metadata packing, HLG and PQ transfer characteristics are supported, together with hardware-based real-time colourspace conversion.

HD down conversion is built in and uses a high-quality software down converter during capture and playback; converted SD can be selected in letterbox or anamorphic 16:9 styles. HD up conversion is built in and provides a high-quality software up converter from SD to HD on input, selectable between 16:9 zoom and anamorphic. Built-in hardware cross conversion changes 720 HD to 1080 HD and 1080 HD to 720 HD during playback. Real-time effects include DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro X internal effects, Adobe Premiere Pro CC Mercury Playback Engine effects and Avid Media Composer internal effects.
