The Cat 5 cable, commonly known as Cat 5, is a type of unshielded twisted-pair cable, designed for an'high signal integrity. This type of cable is often used in structured cabling for computer networks such as Ethernet, and is also used to carry many other signals such as basic voice services, token ring, and ATM (up to 155 MBit/s, on short distances). The Cat 5 cable includes four twisted pairs in an'single jacket. It is more commonly used for networks at 100 Mbps, such as 100BASE-TX Ethernet, although the'IEEE 802.3ab defines the standards for 1000BASE-T - Gigabit Ethernet via Cat 5. The Cat 5 cable typically has three twists per inch of each pair of #24 copper wires at the'inside of the cable.
